GP ANNOUNCES NEW CHRO

The Grameenphone Board has named Mr. Mohammed Shariful Islam as the company’s new Chief Human Resource Officer to replace outgoing CHRO Mr. Quazi Mohammad Shahed, from 1 August 2015.

Mr. Shariful Islam, currently serving as Vice President, HR Governance, Group People Development at Telenor headquarters in Fornebu, Norway, is expected to join Grameenphone on 1 September 2015. Outgoing GP CHRO Mr. Shahed will take up the CHRO role at Uninor, Telenor’s Indian subsidiary, on 1 August.

Mr. Mohammed Shariful Islam, a Bangladeshi, has more than 11 years of experience including 8 years working in human resources at Grameenphone. He also has experience as a university lecturer—coauthoring one local and one international publication during his tenure. He also has previous experience in food and beverage, administration, and market research.

In Grameenphone HR, Mr. Shariful has been involved with and also driven many organization and leadership development initiatives--working hands-on across recruitment, employer branding, talent management, leadership development, organization culture, employee engagement and HR strategy. He was instrumental in revising Grameenphone’s recruitment and talent processes as Deputy Director, Recruitment and Development. As Director, Center of Expertise he helped implement global TDP, Workday and employee share program, launched Grameenphone People Council, revised employee benefits and policies and also helped set a long-term HR strategic roadmap.

Since September 2013 in his role as VP, Group People Development he has been a strategic advisor improving internal strategic and collaboration platforms and working on several initiatives such as leadership development framework, mentorship, Group management trainee program, diversity and talent management.

Commenting on the management change Grameenphone Chief Executive Officer, Mr. Rajeev Sethi, said that “(Quazi Md.) Shahed’s contribution in Grameenphone with people and organization over the last three years has been extremely valuable for the company. He has done a lot to build stronger leadership and better enhance engagement within the organization. I expect that he will play a strong role in bringing about big changes in Uninor as well.”

Quazi Md. Shahed, who joined as GP’s Chief Human Resource Officer (CHRO) on 1st November 2012, said that he is confident that the new CHRO will add value to what has already been accomplished. “Grameenphone will not be new to Sharif as he has served here before, and I am sure that his experience in HR Governance with Telenor will add greater value to GP’s development and its human resource management,” he added.

In-coming GP CHRO Mr. Shariful Islam expressed his excitement to take up his new role, aiming to “continue with the successes and journey of Grameenphone HR and focus on organization culture and employee engagement, capabilities, organization development and excellence of HR team to support the vision and business ambitions for Grameenphone (Telenor).”

Mohammad Shariful Islam has a Masters in Business Administration (MBA) in International Management from University of Texas, Arlington and a BBA in economics from Wichita State University, Kansas, in the United States.

In his personal life, he is married and has two children.
