GP sponsors Martyr Doctors’ bio publication ceremony and Martyred Doctor’s Family Meet

Grameenphone Ltd. has sponsored the publication ceremony of “Muktijudhe Shaheed Chikitshok Jibonkosh” – a biography of Martyr Doctors’ from the Liberation War – held at the Bangabandhu International Convention Center (BICC) at Agargaon on 9 December, 2009.

Mr. Baizid Khoorshid Riaz,is the author of the book and Shahitya Prakash the publishing house. The objective of the book is to let people learn more about the contribution of martyr doctors and medical students during the liberation war and recognize their role during that period.

Professor Dr. A F M Ruhul Haque, Honorable Minister, Health & Family Welfare was present as the Chief Guest on the occasion. Special Guest Mr. H. T. Imam, Establishment and Administration Affairs Advisor to the Honourable Prime Minister, unravelled the book at the event.

Prof. Dr. Syed Modasser Ali, Health & Family Welfare Affairs Advisor to the Honourable Prime Minister Dr. Deepu Moni, Honorable Minister, Foreign Affairs; Captain (Rtd.) AB Tajul Islam, State Minister, Liberation War Affairs, Captain (Rtd.) Mojibur Rahman Fakir, State Minister, Health and Family Welfare; Mr. Sheikh Altaf Ali, Secretary, Health and Family Welfare; Mr. Mofidul Islam, Director, Shahita Prakash were also present as special guests on the occasion.

The family members of the martyr doctors were honored with crests on the occasion. A special song written by Mr. Baizid Khoorshid Riaz, dedicated towards the martyr doctors, was also rendered by noted singers Bappa Majumdar and Fahmida Nabi.

The author of the book made the key-note presentation at the event, and eminent cultural activist and freedom fighter, Mr. Nasiruddin Yusuf, was also at hand to present his views on the occasion.

On behalf of all the martyred doctor’s family members Ms. Shamoly Nasrin Choudhury, wife of Shaheed Dr. A F M Abdul Alim Choudhury shared emotions.

Speaking on the occasion, Grameenphone CEO Mr. Oddvar Hesjedal said “as we read these stories we cannot but stand in humility to how much each of these doctors were asked to stand up to, the extent of their commitment to their oath, and their passion for the realization of a new country.”

The Liberation War is the central component of Bangladesh’s history and is the quilt of common stories that unite the country. There are thousands of such untold stories of supreme sacrifice hidden away in memory that needs to be told.

Grameenphone feels a strong affinity for such story telling and has partnered with the Centre for Bangladesh Liberation War Studies, to sponsor the publication and free distribution of a series of illustrated books, based on true events of the heroics of our freedom fighters, on the Liberation War. GP was also associated with Prothom Alo on the publication of “Ekatture Chithi” – a compilation of letters of closed ones written during the liberation war collected through a nation-wide drive.
