Grameenphone acquired 5 MHz spectrum on 1800 band today at the spectrum auction, held by Bangladesh Telecommunications Regulatory Commission at USD 31 million per megahertz (MHz).

Michael Foley, Grameenphone CEO, said, “This additional spectrum combined with our technology neutral spectrum has placed Grameenphone on a firm footing to provide the best 4G experience on the most modern network in the country.”

The 1800 MHz band is the most suited spectrum for 4G/LTE rollout and GP’s acquisition firmly consolidates its leadership position. Earlier the company had applied for technology neutrality across its entire 2G spectrum and has received approval from the regulator.

Grameenphone has modernized its network, enabling future-forward technology that will allow its customers to experience buffer free HD video and live TV streaming, crystal-clear video calling, and super-fast downloads on its unbeatable network. Customers are encouraged to convert their existing 3G SIMs to 4G-enabled SIMs to get the best of GP’s modern network.

The Grameenphone CEO thanked the BTRC, the telecom ministry, and the government of Bangladesh for successfully concluding the spectrum auction and sought cooperation in rolling out a quality 4G network around the country. “By facilitating the auction the government has taken a big step towards the Implementation of Digital Bangladesh. We hope it will also pave the way for a successful 4G rollout and ensure business viability by adopting rational policies.”

Reiterating that GP has always been known for its superior network and quality of service, Michael Foley stressed, “we are not going to compromise on customer experience when we launch 4G.”
