GP joins hands with TMSS to establish Blood Bank in Bogra

Grameenphone has launched a CSR partnership with Thengamara Mohila Sabuj Sangha (TMSS) on September 19, 2007. Through this partnership, GP will establish a full-fledged blood bank at one of TMSS's health programs, the Rafatullah Community Hospital (RCH) in Bogra, with an aim to ensure the adequate resources required for safe and hygienic blood transfusion for patients requiring blood at RCH.
Major General Dr. A S M Matiur Rahman (retd.), Honorable Health Advisor was present as Chief Guest at the launching ceremony. The LGRD Secretary Mr. Safar Raj Hossain and Dr. Md. Shahjahan Biswas, Director General, of Health Services, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare were also present as special guest. Erik Aas, Managing Director of Grameenphone and Prof. Dr. Hosne Ara Begum, Managing Director of TMSS signed the agreement on behalf of their respective organizations. Kafil H.S. Muyeed, Director, New Business Division, Bidyut Kumar Basu, Head of Regions, and Emon Kalyan Dutta, Head of Rajshahi Region, of Grameenphone were also present at the launching ceremony.
As a conscientious corporate citizen of Bangladesh, Grameenphone has always recognized its social responsibilities, especially towards the less privileged sections of the society, putting special focus on the healthcare needs of the poor of the country. Keeping that in mind, Grameenphone has undertaken various long term healthcare initiatives. Earlier this year, GP launch a nationwide primary healthcare initiative called “the Grameenphone Safe Motherhood and Infant Care Project” with NSDP of USAID, Grameenphone also regularly conducts free eye-care camps for the economically disadvantaged in collaboration with Sightsavers International, through which it has provided free-eye care support to over 4000 poor patients so far.
The aim of TMSS is Family Development through women empowerment. TMSS works in all 6 administrative divisions and in 63 districts, covering 234 upazillas across the country. Other than RCH, TMSS runs other health programs - 64 Primary Health Care Centre called THCCs as well as the Medical technology Institute (TMIRT)
The Rafatullah Community Hospital is located in Bogra right next to the Dhaka-Rangpur Highway, which is also an accident prone area, with a high incidence of need for surgeries and blood transfusion In 2006, RCH transfused 1260 bags of blood to its patients.
RCH also provides free services to the underprivileged people of the community and has 50 beds subsidized for the poor.
