Grameenphone, jointly with Sight Savers International, organized a two-day Eye Camp in Cox's Bazaar Public Library Auditorium from the 28th-29th March, 2007. The camp's mission was to provide eye examinations to the underprivileged people of that region.
The Deputy Commissioner of Cox's Bazaar District, Md. Aminul Islam, who was present at the inaugural session of the camp as chief guest, said that Grameenphone's effort in incorporating humanitarian initiatives into its business is extremely commendable, as it clearly demonstrates Grameenphone's commitment in taking Bangladesh forward.
Superintendent of Police of Cox's Bazaar, Bonoj Kumar Majumder; Area Manager of Grameenphone, Chittagong Region, Md. Sajjad Alam; Program Manager of Sight Savers International, Md. Rafiqul Islam; and Director General of Baitush Saraf Complex, Alhaj Md. Sirajul Islam, were present as special guests. Projects and Partnership Manager Debashis Roy and M&E Manager Dr. Arkanul Islam of CSR Department of Grameenphone were also present.
The turnout of patients at the clinic was more than twice that of the expected 500. Over 1100 patients (48% female) were screened and given prescriptions. Among the patients, 141 were given prescription for refractive error and 114 were selected cataract surgery. More than 30 cataract surgeries were performed on the first day, while the rest were scheduled for the next day.
This initiative undertaken by Grameenphone was greatly appreciated by all those present, especially considering that the program reached out to those who do not have access to proper health care.
As one of the largest corporate houses in the country, Grameenphone has always recognized its social responsibilities, especially to the less privileged sections of the society.
