Jul 18, 2007

Grameenphone, jointly with Sightsavers International, organized a day-long Free Eye-care Camp at the Community Center of Ward-2 of Pallabi Thana in Dhaka City today. Dhaka Urban Eye Care Project and BNSB Eye Hospital of Mirpur also provided their support during this event.
This is the fourth Free Eye Camp organized jointly by Grameenphone and Sightsavers International. Through these camps, conducted in rural parts of Bangladesh, where people have little or no access to quality healthcare, Grameenphone aims to provide free eye-care services to the economically disadvantaged people of the area. The three previous eye camps organized this year were held in Cox's Bazaar, Bagerhat and Natore, in March, April and June respectively and provided care to nearly 3500 poor, rural patients and Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) surgery or cataract surgery was administered on over 400 patients.
The turnout at the Dhaka eye-camp exceeded expectations. About 1200 patients arrived for free eye-care at the camp in Mirpur. All patients were given routine examinations and prescriptions for refractive error were given to those who required it. Nearly 200 patients were referred for and administered Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) or cataract surgery.
The Commissioner of Ward 2, 3 and 5, Begum Meherunnesa Haque, Zaheeda Ispahani, Chairperson, Dhaka Urban Eye Care Project, and Mohammad Ali, Deputy Director, BNSB Eye Hospital, were present on the occasion as special guests. Ghalib Ahmed Ansari, AGM, Commercial Division, Debashis Roy, DGM, CSR Department, Zabid Md. Ahsan, Manager, Regions, of Grameenphone, and representatives of Sightsavers International were also present.
As a conscientious corporate citizen of Bangladesh, Grameenphone has always recognized its social responsibilities, especially towards the less privileged sections of the society, putting special focus on the healthcare needs of the country. Recently, Grameenphone entered into a CSR partnership with Sightsavers International to provide free eye-care support to the poor people of the country. GP is also involved in the countrywide Safe Motherhood and Infant Care project.
