Internet for All = Access to Knowledge for All

Grameenphone arranged a panel discussion with Jimmy Wales, founder of Wikipedia titled “Internet for All=Access to Knowledge for All” today.

The other panelists of the program are Mr. Hakon Bruaset Kjol, Senior Vice President and Head of Corporate Affairs, Region Asia at Telenor Group, Mr. Erlend Prestgard, Head of Strategy of Grameenphone and Mr. Md. Afzal Hossain Sarwar, Policy Expert (Education) of A2I. Mr. Anir Chowdhury, Policy Advisor of A2I moderated the discussion.

The program was participated by the representatives of ICT industry, Academia, NGO’s and media.

During the discussion panelist emphasized on need of appropriate content in local languages to take the real benefit of Internet to the new and upcoming Internet users of the developing countries like Bangladesh.

It was observed in the discussion that most important education materials on the Internet are data heavy and therefore unusable to the people in developing countries, so more cooperation among the stakeholders is needed to make affordable educational content.

GP representative said that the company is ready to help the Internet startups to market their products and content.

Jimmy Wales asked everyone present to start contributing on Wikipedia to enrich local language content.

Earlier Grameenphone announced that Wikimedia mobile sites (m.wikipedia.org) would be accessible free of data charges for all GP subscribers.
