Modernization & innovation to serve our customers better: GP CEO

Feb 03 2020

[Dhaka, February 3, 2020] Grameenphone’s efforts towards modernization and continuously introducing innovative services that meet customers’ daily needs were highlighted by Yasir Azman, Chief Executive Officer of Grameenphone, at a media session at GPHouse today.

Over the past year, GP has focused on growth and its role as a connectivity partner in pursuit of the on-going digital Bangladesh journey of the government. Azman emphasized on the connectivity partners’ role in building a digital eco-system that offers simple yet powerful solutions to maximize the benefits of digital solutions. Furthermore, Azman said, “Grameenphone has always strived to provide the people of Bangladesh affordable access to connectivity in collaboration with government and partners which plays a pivotal role in enabling the greater community.”

Customers today expect Grameenphone to provide solutions that will make their lives more convenient and simpler. 53.1% of the operator’s total subscriber base is already availing data services which is expected to grow further. While, this is very encouraging, Grameenphone has an even bigger sense of duty and responsibility to deliver further.

Grameenphone has a proven track record of timely and strategic investment in its network and modernization journey. The operator looks forward to utilizing the full potential of 4G/LTE services in Bangladesh through planned investment, strengthening the ICT portfolio to meet the requirements of IoT and the Fourth Industrial Revolution. The operator is constructively engaging with the regulator, eco-system partners and the industry in formulating a 5G framework to realize the ambition of Digital Bangladesh.

Grameenphone has been a contributor to the economic and social development of the nation and contributed around BDT 75,450 crore to the national exchequer since its inception. In 2019 the company contributed BDT 8,500 crore to the national exchequer. For every BDT 100 earned, the company has paid BDT 59.2 to the government in the form of taxes, VAT, duties, license/spectrum fees, and revenue fees.

Internet for all is important, but safer internet is critical. In partnership with UNICEF, Grameenphone has been able to educate 900,000 students to be safer online while navigating the internet. According to Yasir Azman, the company is planning to increase this number and help more children nationwide. Recently the operator has increased its deep-see connectivity range for the well-being and safety of the fishermen community of the coastal region. The operator has also engaged in providing rural women connectivity through device financing program in partnership with Ferratum and Srijony

Yasir Azman concluded by reiterating, “We are in a modernization journey to serve our customers better and we have been conducting our operation in Bangladesh by being respectful to the law of the land, culture, and the greater community. We will continue to work with the government, and other partners to foster societal changes, promote online safety, and inspire good business practices in Bangladesh.”
