GRAMEENPHONE and BRAC to expand SAFE INTERNET awareness among students

Sep 28 2017

Focusing on the awareness on “Safe Internet” usage, Grameenphone has announced today in a press conference that the organization is going to expand its campaign of raising awareness on the issue with the partnership of BRAC.

The internet’s roles in “Bridging the Digital Divide” are undeniable, but there are also pitfalls. Ensuring a “Safe Internet” experience for our young minds is equally important. The “Safe Internet” program has been designed to mainly raise awareness, about how school children can safely navigate the internet and teach them some of the “Do’s” and “Don’t’s”.

Grameenphone has so far reached 80,000 children in 500 schools across Bangladesh with the program through activations in schools and distribution of guidebooks on the safe and responsible use of the internet. This year, the organization, in partnership with BRAC, has set an aim to reach a further 50,000 children in 250 schools around Bangladesh. BRAC was also the partner of the earlier initiative.

Mahmud Hossain, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer at Grameenphone, said, ‘Being a digital services provider in Bangladesh, Grameenphone considers it a responsibility to ensure that people, especially children, get the best out of the digital technology at their disposal. Our safe internet program, which is currently in its fourth year, is targeted towards achieving this objective. We believe that spread of the Internet and its benefit among people will help in reducing inequality.’

Grameenphone and Telenor Group have selected Child Online Safety as part of their activities to support Sustainable Development Goals declared by United Nations.” The initiative aims to empower children to make the right decision on how to interact and engage through the internet confidently and responsibly.

Asif Saleh, Senior Director, Strategy, Communication, and Empowerment at BRAC, said, ‘BRAC is delighted to partner with Grameenphone in raising awareness among children and guardians about responsible use of the internet. We believe that together, we will be able to reach the target number of 50,000 this year so that our future leaders have a better chance of growing up educated and socially responsible.’

The event was also attended by other high officials from Grameenphone and Brac.
