Grameenphone and DCC took part in clean up activity in Dhaka University area
Grameenphone Ltd. and Dhaka City Corporation (DCC) have taken a joint initiative to clean up around Dhaka University and Shahbagh area on April 14, 2011.
The pledge of the initiative was “Shobuje Thakun, Kachey Thakun” – starting the New Year with a new pledge to build a greener, cleaner world.
The massive clean up activity started at 9:00 PM in the morning from the Mohsin Hall field and covered the Dhaka University area, notably the Institute of Fine Arts, Ramna Park, TSC, Suhrawardy Udyan etc. Finally, at the Mohsin Hall field, the total waste collected throughout the day was ceremonially handed over to the Dhaka City Corporation at 4:00 PM. Captain Bipon Kumar Saha, Chief Waste Management Officer of DCC, Kazi Monirul Kabir, CCO Grameenphone and Mahmud Hossain, Chief Corporate Affairs Officer of Grameenphone were present at the occasion.
Each year the grand celebration for welcoming the first day of Bengali New Year leaves more than 100 Tons of wastes in Dhaka University area. Expressing Grameenphone's solidarity with the Dhaka City Corporation's (DCC) objective to build a cleaner and greener Dhaka, Grameenphone joined forces DCC this year with this clean up activation.
On this occasion Grameenphone's CCO Kazi Monirul Kabir said, “14th April brings the advent of the Bangla New Year. It is a time for celebration of Bangladeshis from all walks of life. It is also the time to make a New Year resolution, that of playing an active part in ensuring a Clean, Green Dhaka.”
Grameenphone's environmental campaign titled “Stay Green, Stay Close” was launched in 2009 with an objective to support a healthier environment through innovative environmental activations and initiatives. As part of this program, 21,000 free saplings were distributed across the country that year. In January 2010, Grameenphone co sponsored “Clean Dhaka Week 2010”; an awareness campaign where all the wards of Dhaka City Corporation vied for “Best Ward” award for cleanliness. Employees of Grameenphone Ltd. participated in the “Clean Dhaka Week 2010”. The campaign was jointly organized by Dhaka City Corporation and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) on 16 January 2010. More than 250 employees of Grameenphone volunteered to clean the street, and its peripheral area, on Gulshan Avenue. They also distributed waste bins among owners of the street side shops. The objective of the campaign was to create awareness among the city dwellers regarding the necessity of cleanliness to live in Dhaka City.
Dhaka is one of the most polluted cities in the world and citizen awareness is very important to keep this city clean. Grameenphone hopes that the example set by its employees will inspire others to join the cause and make Dhaka a clean and beautiful city.
