Grameenphone organizes third Free Eye-camp

Grameenphone, jointly with Sight Savers International, organized a two-day Eye Camp at Sher-E-Bangla High School in Horishpur, Natore from 25th-26th June, 2007.
This is the third Free Eye-camp organized jointly by Grameenphone and Sight Saver International. Through these camps, conducted in rural parts of Bangladesh, where people have little or no access to quality healthcare, Grameenphone aims to provide free eye-care services to the economically disadvantaged people of the area. The two previous camps organized this year were held in Cox's Bazaar and Bagerhat, in March and April respectively and provided care to over 2500 poor, rural patients.
The Deputy Commissioner of Natore, S M Ehsan Kabir was present at the inaugural session of the camp as the chief guest. Dr. Md. Ishaq Ali, Civil Surgeon, and Md. Rezaul Karim, Superintendent of Police, were present as special guests. Emon Kalyan Dutta, Head of Rajshahi Region and Dr. Arkanul Islam, Manager, CSR Department of Grameenphone were also present.
Speaking on the occasion, the DC of Natore expressed his appreciation of Grameenphone's efforts to come to the aide of the underprivileged people of Bangladesh.
More than 1100 patients arrived for care at the Sher-E-Bangla High School. All patients were given routine examinations and prescriptions for refractive error were given to those who required it. Over 120 patients were referred for and administered Intra Ocular Lens (IOL) or cataract surgeries.
As a conscientious corporate citizen of Bangladesh, Grameenphone has always recognized its social responsibilities, especially to the less privileged sections of the society, putting special focus on the healthcare needs of the country. Recently, Grameenphone, jointly with NSDP of USAID launched the nationwide safe motherhood project, "Grameenphone Safe Motherhood and Infant Care" through which, GP will provide free yet comprehensive healthcare services to not only pregnant and new mothers, but also their infants. Grameenphone has also recently signed a partnership with Dhaka Ahsania Mission to sponsor 5 wards and an Operation Theater dedicated to providing cancer treatment for the poor.
