Sultan Mela begins

o decades not only to celebrate birth anniversary SM Sultan but also to cherish the local art and culture of Bangladesh. Senior officials of local administration and Grameenphone were present during the inaugural program.

A number of activities such as an art competition, art exhibition, bull fight, horse-cart race, male ha-do do, kusti, female kabadi, male volleyball will make up this seven-day event. During the week-long fair, several cultural and musical programs along with seminars on SM Sultan will also be held. The fair will conclude on January 15.

Moshiur Rahman, Divisional Commissioner of Khulna said, “SM Sultan is our pride. His paintings have always inspired the art and culture of Bangladesh.”
SM Sultan, also known as Lal Mia, was born at Masumdia village under Narail Sadar upazila on August 10, 1924. His paintings used to given the impression of vastness and strength of the rural and working class people and always portrayed the picture of happy and prosperous Bangladesh.

Sultan was awarded with Ekushey Padak in 1982 and Swadhinata Padak in 1993 for his outstanding contribution in the field of culture. He was also declared man of Asia by Cambridge University. He died on October 10, 1994.
