Grameenphone opens fiber link through Jamuna Bridge

Grameenphone Ltd. opened its fiber-optic cable link through the 4.8 kilometer-long Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge today, becoming the first mobile phone operator in the country to do so.

The fiber-optic cable link was jointly inaugurated by Khan M Ibrahim Hossain, Secretary to the Government and Executive Director, Jamuna Multipurpose Bridge Authority, and Erik Aas, Managing Director of Grameenphone, in a simple ceremony at Bridge End facility in Bhuapur, Tangail.

"As a multipurpose bridge, the Jamuna Bridge has been providing for highway traffic, railway link, gas transmission line, power transmission line and BTTB line. Now, with the opening of fiber-optic cable link of Grameenphone, it opens the gateway to the cell phone company to the north and southwest part of the country," observed Khan M Ibrahim Hossain.

The fiber-optic cable links Elenga in Tangail and Nolka in Sirajganj and covers a length of about 40 kilometers through the Jamuna Bridge. This link completes the Grameenphone fiber-optic transmission backbone between the East and West zones of the country.

"This fiber-optic link is another milestone for Grameenphone," said Erik Aas. "It will make the Grameenphone network more robust and dependable and will also help us to further improve network quality and coverage, greatly benefiting the people of Rajshahi, Khulna and Barisal divisions."

The fiber-optic transmission backbone will ensure a more secure network providing high quality voice and data services in the Northern and Southern districts.
