Grameenphone Ltd. today initiated an effort to provide primary healthcare support to the flood affected people, as a part of its extensive relief response program. The first Medical Camps were set up to serve the flood-affected people in Badda area, in the capital.
With assistance from the Joint Armed Forces and the local authorities, a Medical Camp has been set up at the Ekramarunnesha Memorial Hospital at Beraidh union in Badda thana. The Medical Camp will provide free medical aid to the flood-affected people of Beraidh, Shatarkul, and Nasiabad unions.
In addition to this Camp, Grameenphone has also set up a Floating Medical Camp on an engine boat to reach areas where people are completely isolated and also out of the reach of medical help. The Floating Medical Camp will cover areas such as Fakiskhali, Pachdir Teck, Chandar Teck, East & West Haradia, Trimohoni and Ballur Pare.
These are the first of the six such Medical Camps to be opened by Grameenphone. Three other static Medical Camps will be set up to serve the affected people of Satarkul, Khilgaon and Beraid. One static Medial Camp will be set up in Sirajganj and will start operations on 14th August.
The Grameenphone Medical Camps are equipped with medical supplies to treat water-borne diseases and to combat the onset of other common post-flood diseases. The Grameenphone Medial Camps will be run by doctors from GP's CSR partner, The Smiling Sun Clinics of USAID as well as doctors from Japan Bangladesh Friendship Hospital.
Since the onset of the floods, Grameenphone has distributed flood relief in Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet Divisions. As part of the 2nd phase of GP's relief-response program, GP has set up gruel kitchens in the Badda area to provide cooked food to the victims. Since it started, the kitchen has been providing khitcuhri to around 4500 people in the area daily (over 3000 people in Shatarkul and 1500 people at the Boraidh Rehmat Ali Degree College). Grameenphone has also distributed around 2,500 family packs of basic food supplies in Bhatara Union. Each family pack contained rice, dal, Soybean oil, and other essentials. During its first phase of relief operations, Grameenphone distributed over 10,700 family packs of food supplies to the flood-affected people in eight Districts across Dhaka, Rajshahi and Sylhet Divisions.
Khaled Hasan, Director, Corporate & Regulatory Affairs, N.K.A. Mobin, Director, Administration & Projects, Lutfir Rahman, Acting Head of IT, of Grameenphone; and Lieutenant Colonel Sarwar and Major Zia of the Joint Forces were present during the inauguration of the Grameenphone Medical Camps.
Grameenphone has been actively engaged in the emergency relief efforts in the flood-affected areas over the last week. Apart from the distribution of relief materials including food and other essential items, last week, Grameenphone's Managing Director, Erik Aas, handed over three cheques worth Tk 4.31 crore to the Chief Advisor's Relief Fund.
